A century ago...
In the 1920s, most of the 18th-century Cascina Donati and the 15-hectare estate on which it stands were purchased by the Beltrami family. Already in the period between the two world wars, the land was entrusted to stewards, who used it for grazing to produce milk and cheese or as vineyards on terraces in the middle part of the property. In the upper part, the woods were preserved for the production of chestnuts and firewood.
The people
For the purpose of providing housing for the farm managers, the construction of a second farmhouse in the flattest part of the property was completed in 1934, which was also equipped with a stable and barn.
The only heirs of the Beltrami family were the children of Caterina Beltrami, Mario and Annamaria Covini, whose uncles continued to live in the historic farmhouse from 1722, partially modernized, until the 1970s. Mario, although he moved to Milan after the end of the Second World War, continued to oversee the property. After the death of his mother and uncles, he also acquired his sister's share, as she had in the meantime moved to Uruguay. Around the mid-1980s, however, changes in the agricultural economy no longer guaranteed sufficient profitability for the now outdated management model of the estate. The farmer who managed it at that time, also due to age, was therefore forced to abandon the activity.
Today
The historic farmhouse from 1722 was from that moment used as a weekend home and gradually renovated. In 1993, the restoration of the more recent farmhouse followed, with the same use as a second home. The latter has become the operational headquarters of the current farm, while a berry plantation was built on the land in front. In the early 2000s, the remaining part of the 18th-century historic farmhouse was also purchased and renovated, confirming the deep bond the family has maintained with this place.
