The Origins of Ca' Donato
... dates back to at least 1722: in fact, it is surveyed as Cascina Donati in the original map of the Catasto Teresiano of the municipality of Luvino (then Luino since 1889), restored and preserved at the State Archives of Milan (Id. 213421 Segnatura 1077 at No. 117 list of owners).
The Recovery
Although until the early 2000s the property was lived on only as a weekend home, the connection to the origins of this land remained strong in our family. Thus, the idea matured to make a part of the estate productive again, in order to recover the tradition of the local agricultural economy and at the same time adapt it to current market prospects and socioeconomic changes specific to the Luino area. This idea was then realized in 2019 with the creation of the company and the construction of the agricultural facility.
The Basic Principles
The guidelines that guided the development of the project were:
- Attention to quality in every production process
- Certified organic cultivation
- Local economic chain
The small fruits turned out to be a logical choice among the available options: in this way a genuine product, which respects the natural predisposition of the soil and is cultivated exclusively following the organic protocol, is destined for the local market. The constant care for quality results in a return on investment that allows, over time, to strengthen the local economic chain and create new employment prospects in the agricultural sector.
In the winter of 2020/21, pursuing the orientation to product quality and genuineness and making use of the most up-to-date methods for organic cultivation, we added to the initial hail protection the perimeter insect net (with the contribution of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and EU funds). This provides mechanical plant protection from non-native insects, which are increasingly invasive, and allows us to reduce the use of repellents.
So in 2022 we upgraded the irrigation system by including fertigation, in order to both optimize plant care and reduce the need for water.
