One Century Ago...
In the 1920s much of the 1700's Cascina Donati and the 15-hectare estate on which it is located were purchased by the Beltrami family. As early as the period between the two World Wars, the land was entrusted to farmers, who either ran it as pasture to produce milk and cheese or as vineyards on terraces in the middle part of the property. In the upper part, woods were preserved for the production of chestnuts and firewood.
The People
For the purpose of providing housing for the farmers, the construction of a second farmhouse on the flatter part of the property was completed in 1934, which was also equipped with a stable and barn.
The only heirs of the Beltrami family were Caterina Beltrami's children, Mario and Annamaria Covini, whose aunt and uncle continued to inhabit the partially modernized 1722 historic farmstead until the 1970s. Mario, although he moved to Milan after the end of World War II, continued to follow the property. After his mother and uncles had passed away, he also took over the share of his sister, who had meanwhile moved to Uruguay in turn. By the mid-1980s, however, changes in the agricultural economy no longer ensured sufficient profitability for the outdated model of estate management. The farmer who managed it at that time, partly for age reasons, was therefore forced to leave the business.
Today
The 1722 historic farmstead was from that time used as a weekend house and gradually renovated. The renovation of the newer farmstead followed in 1993, with the same use as a second house. The latter became the operational headquarters of the current farm, while the agricultural facility was built on the land in front of it. Finally, in the early 2000s, the remaining part of the historic 18th-century farmhouse was also purchased and renovated, confirming the deep connection the family has maintained with this place.
